Africa Summit 2018: Regional Solutions to Global Challenges

The Africa Summit 2018 at the University of St. Gallen was a pivotal event that delved into the heart of Africa's dynamism and its role on the global stage. Themed "Regional Solutions to Global Challenges," the summit illuminated the continent's innovative use of technology, its entrepreneurial spirit, and the empowerment of millions through education and training. Our aim was to explore how Africa's brightest ideas not only shape the future of the continent but also have the potential to influence the entire world.

Over the course of the summit, we engaged in profound discussions on the extent to which Africa's challenges are intertwined with a global, interdependent system. This platform facilitated an exchange of diverse perspectives, enabling participants to gain a deeper understanding of Africa’s versatility and capabilities.

The summit featured several keynote speeches and panels, including:
- **Migration: What does that actually imply?** by Celeste Ugochukwu of the African Council Switzerland, offered insights into the dynamics of the African diaspora in Switzerland and the broader implications of African migration to Europe.
- **Green Economy: Is Africa’s future green?** by Mao A. Amis from the African Center for a Green Economy, South Africa, discussed the severe challenges of climate change, water crises, and environmental pollution, and the potential for green growth and entrepreneurship in Africa.
- **High Growth Market: In/Reinsurance potential and prospect** by Salvatore Orlando of SwissRe, Switzerland, highlighted the significance of in/reinsurance in Africa's development across various sectors.
- **Global Trade and Public Debt Management** by Ricardo Murillo from UNCTAD, Switzerland, examined the role of trade and the management of public debt in African economies.
- **The Human Right to Health Care and the State/Firm Division of Moral Labour in Sub-Saharan Africa** by Thierry Ngosso from Harvard University, USA, explored the obligations of African societies, states, and firms towards providing healthcare.

The summit also hosted panels and workshops addressing crucial topics like Fintech, development, the perception of Africa, urban planning, and the mining industry. These sessions not only showcased the innovative solutions being implemented across the continent but also prompted a reevaluation of conventional narratives about Africa.

One of the most innovative sessions, the Open Panel, "Get Active: Make your voice heard," broke the traditional panel format to foster a more interactive and dynamic exchange of ideas. This format encouraged participants to engage directly with speakers, fostering an environment rich in dialogue and collaboration.

The Africa Summit 2018 was more than just an event; it was a catalyst for change, offering a glimpse into the future of a continent that is rapidly redefining itself through local solutions to global challenges. Our heartfelt thanks go to all speakers, participants, and organizers for their invaluable contributions. The insights gained and relationships forged during this summit will undoubtedly continue to inspire and drive forward the agenda for Africa's development.

Looking ahead, we are energized by the promise of further innovations and collaborations that will emerge from Africa. We invite you to join us in future summits as we continue to explore, celebrate, and contribute to the continent's remarkable journey towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
